The AA Promises, Explained
The Promises, In Plain Language
Toward the end of the chapter "Into Action" in AA's Big Book is a passage widely known simply as "the Promises" — a list of changes many in recovery describe experiencing as they work the steps. The official wording is copyrighted by Alcoholics Anonymous World Services; you can read the exact official text at aa.org or in the Big Book itself. In plain language, the Promises describe things like:
- A new sense of freedom and happiness, replacing the fear and regret that often come with addiction.
- Being able to look back on the past without wishing to shut the door on it, and understanding it instead of running from it.
- Losing interest in selfish things and gaining interest in other people.
- Self-seeking behavior fading, replaced by a more outward-looking way of living.
- A shift in overall outlook and attitude toward life.
- Less fear of people and of financial insecurity.
- Knowing intuitively how to handle situations that used to baffle you.
- A growing realization that a higher power is doing for you what you couldn't do for yourself.
The Big Book is candid about this list: these things don't happen overnight, and they don't happen to everyone in the same order or at the same pace — but for many people who stick with the work, they do happen. For the exact original wording, visit aa.org, or pick up one of our Big Book editions.
